The landscape for early education and childcare is changing, following the Government announcement to expand and phase in 30 hours of early education and childcare for working families with younger children.

Currently, eligible working families can get 30 hours funded early education and childcare from the term after their child’s 3rd birthday.

By September 2025, working families with children from 9 months to school age will be entitled to 30 hours of early education and childcare support. The changes are being phased in incrementally. This means that:

  • From April 2024, working parents of two year-olds will be able to access 15 hours early education and childcare support from the term after the 2nd birthday.
  • From September 2025, working parents of children under the age of five will be entitled to 30 hours of early education and childcare a week.
  • These new entitlements are in addition to the existing funded entitlement for two year olds where families on lower incomes and in receipt of certain benefits or children in particular circumstances can access 15 hours of funded childcare. This entitlement will continue.
